🤔 When geopolitics meets crypto fraud in the Strait of Hormuz
Shipping companies are reportedly receiving "official" offers for safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz - payable in $BTC or USDT. The pitch is simple: pay a "customs fee" in crypto and your vessel will transit safely.
At least one ship that paid was reportedly fired upon on April 18 while attempting passage.
Since April 12, after failed negotiations between Iran and the United States Navy, the strait has effectively been blocked. Oil markets reacted. Freight insurance premiums spiked. And now crypto has entered the picture - not as a hedge, but as a tool for fraud.
